Rubber flooring exists for one job: taking impact. A dropped barbell, a rolling equipment cart, a decade of foot traffic through a facility entrance. For Olympic lifting where a loaded bar gets dropped from the hip or overhead, 3/4 inch is the floor — literally — and serious platforms go thicker still or use a dedicated lifting platform on top.
Under-specifying is the mistake we see most. An 8mm mat under a squat rack does not protect the slab, and a dropped bar cracks concrete under it just fine. Interlocking tiles are the DIY-friendliest format and the easiest to modify later — pull one damaged tile, drop in a new one. The tradeoff is a visible seam grid and, in a heavily used room, a tendency for joints to work apart over time under lateral force.
Rolled rubber gives a nearly seamless surface across a large room and is the standard in commercial fitness. It is heavy and awkward to install — a 4-foot roll can run well over a hundred pounds — and it wants to be glued or at minimum double-face taped at the seams in a commercial setting. Individual mats are the loose-lay option for a rack area or a single station where a full-room floor is not warranted.
Most home gyms in this area end up in the basement, which is the right choice — it is where the ceiling height and the tolerance for noise are. But a basement slab is also where moisture problems live, and rubber is essentially a vapor barrier. Lay an impermeable surface over a slab that is pushing moisture and you trap it, which grows mold at the interface and produces a smell that will not go away without pulling the floor.

Recycled rubber flooring has an odor when new. It comes from the recycled tire crumb and it is the most common complaint in the first few weeks. In a well-ventilated commercial space it fades substantially within a month; in a closed basement with no air exchange it can linger considerably longer and be genuinely unpleasant in the meantime.
If odor is a hard constraint — the room shares air with a finished living space, or someone in the house is sensitive — virgin rubber and EPDM-topped products are far lower odor and cost more. Running a fan and ventilating aggressively for the first two weeks makes a large difference regardless of which product you choose.
Sweep or vacuum, and damp-mop with a pH-neutral cleaner. What will damage rubber is solvent-based cleaner, bleach, and oil — all three break down the binder and leave a soft, tacky surface that never recovers. That rules out most degreasers, which is worth knowing in a garage application.
Point loads are the other consideration. Rubber compresses, so a heavy rack or a piece of equipment sitting in one place indents the surface, and a deep indentation left for years will not fully rebound. In a garage or workshop, plan for equipment placement before the floor goes down rather than after.
